Application of Polyhedral Oligomeric Silses uioxane in
Anticorrosive Epoxy Coating for Steel

Abstract:The structural characteristics of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(POSS),
method of incorporating into epoxy coating,and effect on the anti-corrosive performance of
epoxy coating were focused in this paper. It was possible to design POSS/epoxy anti-corrosive
coating with multiple functions due to the unique inorganic core/organic shell structure of
POSS,its tailorability,compatibility,and reactivity with organic groups. POSS could be
introduced into epoxy coating through its own main structure or by modifying other main
structures. The introduction of POSS could effectively improve the corrosion resistance of
epoxy coating,which may be mainly due to the physical filling and shielding effect of POSS
nanocages,cross-linking and densification effect of enhancing epoxy networks,and promotion
of stable passivation layer formation and active repair by utilizing the electroactive

characteristics. In the future,t was necessary to strengthen the exploration of new ways of
introducing POSS into epoxy resins,control the dispersion uniformity of POSS structures,
deeply reveal the interaction mechanism between POSS and epoxy resins,and seek more
intuitive evidence to explain the improvement of coating corrosion resistance by POSS.
